In 1867 Beresford began writing complaints about HMS Research, an experimental ironclad sloop used to test armour and armament arrangements. An 1865 assessment also condemned its fighting and seakeeping qualities, giving his dissatisfaction some corroboration. Changes had addressed its trim, balance, and displacement problems by 1876. His repeated complaints did not prevent an appointment to the royal yacht Victoria and Albert in summer 1868.
