Chapter ยท 14:33-16:08

Beresford as Fisher's political foil

Lord Charles Beresford was the well-connected opponent whose career repeatedly collided with Jackie Fisher's reforming Navy.

Notes

Beresford is Fisher's foil without being his mirror image. Fisher advanced through professional achievement, while Beresford repeatedly benefited from family, political, and social connections. Fisher's warning that Nelson could not enter the contemporary Royal Navy while Beresford could makes the professionalisation problem explicit. Their conflict became a dispute over what competence and authority should mean in the Royal Navy.
