Beresford served as second-in-command of the royal yacht Osborne from 1878 to 1881. In 1882 he commanded HMS Condor during the Egyptian War and the bombardment of Alexandria. He then joined Garnet Wolseley's Gordon Relief Expedition. His service moved from a royal-yacht appointment to gunboat combat and then to an expedition ashore.
