Chapter ยท 1:10:07-1:11:05

China, commerce, and an admiral's political reach

Beresford used his parliamentary and naval prominence on a commercial mission to China before publishing The Break-up of China.

Notes

After promotion to rear admiral and another return to Parliament, Beresford spent one hundred days in China representing the Associated Chambers of Commerce. He then wrote The Break-up of China in thirty-one days, publishing it in 1899. The trip took him away from his York constituency while he pursued British commercial interests abroad. In January 1900 he resigned his seat to become second-in-command of the Mediterranean Fleet.
