What if Fisher served only one term and Beresford became First Sea Lord from 1907 to 1910?
Short answerBeresford would probably oppose further early battlecruisers, although the Invincibles might still be built.
NotesBeresford's preference for battleships would make later early battlecruisers much harder to approve. The Invincibles could survive the change, while the next generation would face stronger opposition. Fisher's reliance on speed as protection receives a more specific criticism: the first battlecruisers did not have enough speed in reserve to remain decisively faster as other ships improved. Speeds of 35 knots in the first generation and over 40 in the next are offered as an illustration of what that argument would require. Building such ships with the machinery of the period would itself have been extremely difficult.
