Algeria's Beni Abbès as a compact amphibious force

The Algerian San Giorgio derivative shows how one ship can combine troops, tanks, landing craft, medical support, and meaningful self-defence.

Notes

Beni Abbès is a major expeditionary asset for a navy that is not otherwise large. Its troop and tank lift, landing craft, hospital facilities, radar, gun, and missile fit show how a smaller state can buy an independent capability rather than a token transport. The ship can move roughly half a battalion and heavy armour while also providing medical support and local air defence. Algeria's choice reflects the post-1980 spread of meaningful amphibious power below the traditional major navies. That independence is relative: a submarine threat would still require outside anti-submarine protection unless an embarked helicopter could fill part of that role.
