British forces reached Benghazi faster than their anti-aircraft guns, radar, air cover, and mobile support systems could follow. Moving a fighting force was much faster than relocating the base infrastructure that sustained it. Fuel storage, handling, and distribution had to be established first, followed by food and then the slower work of creating ammunition facilities. The RAF later studied Royal Navy mobile naval air bases as it improved its own mobile basing methods.
