Benbow entered commission in June 1888 and served with the training fleet until October 1891. After a period in reserve, she returned for short manoeuvre commissions in 1894 and then served as guardship at Greenock until April 1904. She also joined Edward VII’s coronation fleet review at Spithead in August 1902. Benbow returned to reserve and was sold for breaking up in 1909. Her career shows how a capital ship could remain useful through training, reserve, and guardship duties without seeing battle.
