Belize had little strategic depth and faced recurring Guatemalan pressure. Parts of Guatemala's constitution treated Belize as its twenty-third department, while another justification cited Britain's failure to build a treaty-promised road linking Guatemala to the Caribbean. Britain wanted to avoid a large land intervention with wider political costs. HMS Ark Royal brought Buccaneers, Phantoms, and other aircraft from the United States east coast against a Guatemalan air force still equipped with P-51 Mustangs, showing that a small local tripwire could receive overwhelming air support. The carrier created a credible threat quickly while leaving time for diplomacy and a more sustainable political settlement. This was deterrence rather than a complete defence: if Guatemala had pressed the attack, air strikes alone would have had limited ability to stop it.

HMS Ark Royal deters a threat to Belize
The rapid arrival of HMS Ark Royal and its air group helped deter Guatemala in 1972 without a large British troop deployment, though carrier air alone could not answer a determined invasion.
