Beckwith commands from the front at fifty-seven

The campaign account shows Thomas Beckwith directing troops from a hillock and personally entering combat despite being about fifty-seven years old.

Notes

An image shows Beckwith directing his troops from a small hillock, while the campaign account places him personally in armed combat. His age is estimated at about fifty-seven, much older than many of the men facing him. A later clarification says he positioned himself against the strongest part of the French line, where troops of the 66th Regiment were present. His personal presence and professional confidence shaped the way he exercised Napoleonic-era field command.
