Reading castle construction at Beaumaris

Beaumaris Castle offers a practical way to read construction evidence on site. The attractive image shown on screen is highly idealized, while displays inside the castle explain the tools and methods used to build it. That contrast separates the picturesque finished fortress from the labor and technique that produced it. James's reputation becomes easier to understand when set beside the material practice of medieval castle building.
