Beatty's Dogger Bank grievance sharpened the pursuit

Beatty's frustration over the limited British result at Dogger Bank reinforced an aggressive chase, while weak signaling again exposed the Fifth Battle Squadron.

Notes

Beatty still regarded Dogger Bank as a missed chance to destroy Hipper's force, even though his communications had largely caused the confused pursuit there. That grievance helps explain the aggressive chase when Hipper appeared off Jutland. Beatty followed the target ahead without maintaining the positional reporting required by the British plan. When he turned north after sighting the High Seas Fleet, the Fifth Battle Squadron learned late and had to recognize the danger for itself. Personal command habits and poor signaling combined to expose the fast battleships.
