Lion's flash protection before rate-of-fire pressure

In this early-war branch, Lion may operate more safely because Beatty has not yet spent months prioritising rate of fire over flash precautions.

Notes

Lion might have better flash protection in August 1914 because Beatty had not yet spent months pressing crews to increase their rate of fire. Her gunnery could therefore be conducted more safely at this early stage. The possible advantage comes from ammunition-handling practice, without requiring a different ship design. Survivability depends on operating practice as well as nominal armour.
