The semi-dreadnought is made broad and shallow to reduce pitch and roll, then compared with a narrow, deep alternative. Beam and draft matter in real design, although the model appears to exaggerate or distort their effects. Even with very high engine efficiency, the hull needs more displacement than the current limit permits before its stability figures become acceptable. Construction is postponed because the machinery, hull size, and weight allowance have not yet converged on a workable design.

Beam, draft, and the updated stability model
A semi-dreadnought study tests how beam, draft, machinery efficiency, and displacement interact under the revised design model.
