Reliable railguns demand enormous magazines

High-rate railguns remain useful after more advanced systems fail, but sustained fire requires roughly 1.56 million ready rounds and substantial reload depth.

Notes

The railguns are valued as rugged close-defense weapons that can keep fighting after more advanced systems are damaged. With twenty-six twin mounts, the ship has fifty-two barrels demanding ammunition at a very high rate. Allowing three 10,000-round magazines per barrel produces about 1.56 million ready rounds, and even that estimate is conservative. Deeper reserve stowage or an onboard capability to manufacture replacements from local material would require more machinery, space, and trained personnel. The calculation turns a visually simple secondary weapon into a major magazine, handling, and replenishment problem. Reliability does not make the railgun battery logistically cheap, especially for a ship operating far from support.
