Chapter · 3:20-9:16

The Bazán family's naval profession

The Bazán family's commands, shipbuilding, and galley service trained the younger Álvaro de Bazán from childhood.

Notes

Santa Cruz belonged to a family of professional commanders associated with Castile's galley forces. His father, Álvaro de Bazán the Elder, combined campaigning, coastal defense, galley command, private resources, and experimental shipbuilding. The elder Bazán captured ships and treasure, brought personally owned forces into royal service, and developed vessels to protect Spain's routes from the Indies against corsair attacks. The younger Bazán served beside him and inherited responsibility for the family's military reputation at age thirty-two, making his later success the product of a long apprenticeship rather than a sudden court appointment. The family example linked tactical command to the financial and industrial capacity needed to put usable ships at sea.
