Battlestar Galactica and the danger of fleet-wide software

Galactica's separation from networked systems is presented as a sound response to an enemy that can exploit a fleet-wide software dependency.

Notes

The Colonial fleet installs an advanced control system despite its enemy's established ability to compromise networked machines. A safer approach would trial unfamiliar automation on small units inside a task group able to contain a failure. A controlled test still would not defeat a patient adversary, so every captain also needs a rapid and decisive way to isolate or destroy the suspect system. A chief petty officer could rig a shutdown that stops it permanently rather than preserving it for convenient reactivation. Safe failure modes matter more than assuming sophisticated software cannot be compromised.
