Battlestar Galactica and the workload of a carrier crew

Which Battlestar Galactica series better depicts carrier life?

The older series, because the modern version gives its crew far more free time than a real carrier normally permits.

The comparison turns on how much unscheduled time the crews seem to have. The older series is considered closer to carrier life, while the modern series gives its personnel implausibly frequent leisure. Even during quieter periods, warship routines tend toward "hurry up and wait," and the executive officer can usually find more work. The fictional setting provides a useful comparison for the tempo of a real carrier crew.
