Why a battlestar fleet still needs smaller escorts

Battlestar Galactica's surviving fleet prompts a force-structure critique: capital ships cannot plausibly replace every cruiser, destroyer, and escort.

Notes

Civilian ships and a partly decommissioned battlestar survive, yet no smaller warships join the refugee fleet. A navy composed only of battlestars would be strategically and economically implausible because capital ships need smaller combatants for screening and routine tasks. Cruisers and destroyers should also be dispersed on independent missions, making their complete absence more surprising than the loss of ships concentrated at major bases. Even an elderly carrier would normally retain some form of escort or have smaller forces nearby. The fictional omission points back to the real need for a balanced fleet around its capital ships.
