Why were battleships less prominent in Pacific fleet actions?
Short answerUS oiler limits and Japanese decisive-battle doctrine kept battle fleets back, while lighter and carrier forces were easier to deploy.
NotesThe United States lacked enough fast fleet oilers to deploy every heavy force across the Pacific. Carrier groups, cruisers, and destroyers consumed less fuel and therefore received priority for many operations. Japan meanwhile retained much of its battle fleet for the decisive engagement envisioned by Kantai Kessen doctrine and also faced fuel limits. Battleships did fight one another in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and North Sea, so the Pacific pattern should not be mistaken for a universal wartime rule.
