How useful were torpedo tubes aboard battleships?
Short answerThey could help at very close range, but their space cost was hard to justify on ships intended to fight effectively with heavy guns at much longer distances.
NotesTorpedo tubes are attractive as an additional weapon, but their design cost changes the judgment. They consume a large amount of space low in the ship that could serve other purposes. On a battleship armed with 15-, 16-, or 18-inch guns, an enemy should not normally reach a position where the tubes become useful. If it does, other parts of the engagement have probably already gone wrong, and the battleship might still get no opportunity to fire them.
