What naval gunfire does to tanks ashore

Uncertain battlefield attribution does not change the physical conclusion: direct hits from battleship, cruiser, or even destroyer guns would overwhelm contemporary tank armor.

Question

Did a battleship hit a tank during an amphibious landing, and could the tank survive?

Short answer

The exact shooter is often impossible to prove, but no wartime or modern tank could withstand a direct battleship-caliber hit, and cruiser shells would also be devastating.

Notes

A destroyed tank in a crowded naval bombardment zone may not reveal which gun actually hit it. A direct battleship-caliber impact would leave too little evidence for easy identification, and even six- or eight-inch shells could be decisive. A destroyer's 4.7-inch gun represented far more explosive force than a tank was designed to absorb. The destructive effect can make precise attribution harder rather than easier.
