A lone capital ship can become a white elephant whenever it is refitting, damaged or lost. Two ships create a usable capability but leave it one casualty away from collapse. Three improve availability, four make continuous presence more realistic and five or six make the force more resilient. The number of theatres that need the capability at once turns ship count into an operational-availability problem rather than a prestige total.

Why one capital ship is not a durable capability
Capital-ship strength depends on numbers: a single ship is fragile, while larger groups create availability and resilience.
