An 1880 naval chronicle close to the age of sail

A Victorian illustrated history offers a near-contemporary view of Royal Navy actions from the Napoleonic era into the nineteenth century.

Notes

The second volume of this illustrated British naval history was published in 1880. Its chronological contents run through actions from 1800 into the 1840s, preserving the battles and personalities its Victorian compilers considered worth remembering. Written much closer to the events than a modern survey, its language and selection reveal nineteenth-century naval memory as well as operational detail. The illustrations and named commanders make it useful for teaching, while its gaps show that every historical collection is selective.
