Battlecruiser roles dispersed during the Second World War

The type's scouting, commerce protection, pursuit, and heavy striking functions did not disappear when few ships retained the label. Carrier aircraft expanded reconnaissance and attack range, fast battleships supplied survivable speed, and cruiser-destroyer groups handled distributed patrol and escort work. The repeated carrier-battlecruiser-cruiser-destroyer exercise package appeared in Force H, showing that transition came through reorganizing roles as well as replacing hulls. The battlecruiser was a bundle of missions whose components migrated into later task groups.
