Battlecruisers judged by mission, not labels

A battlecruiser's value depends on whether its speed, protection, and firepower match the mission its navy actually needs it to perform.

Notes

British battlecruisers were intended to pursue raiders, protect trade routes, and cover distant choke points, while German ships served a different strategic setting. Comparing armour or gun figures alone can therefore mislead because a ship that is strong on paper may still be a poor fit for its navy's geography and operational tasks. Battlecruisers sit on a spectrum between cruiser-oriented ships and battle-oriented fast battleships. Their role determines the useful balance of speed, protection, and firepower.
