Battlecruisers as lancers, not line-of-battle ships

A cavalry analogy explains why battlecruisers were meant to use speed and reach rather than exchange blows with battleships.

Question

Would more German battlecruisers exploding at Jutland have changed perceptions of British battlecruisers?

Short answer

Yes. It would have made the shared doctrinal problem clearer: battlecruisers were not intended to exchange sustained fire with battleships in the battle line.

Notes

A battleship is compared to an armoured fighter in a melee and a battlecruiser to a lancer on horseback. The battlecruiser can strike and disengage, but loses the advantage of speed if it remains in a slugging match against a battleship. More German battlecruiser losses at Jutland would therefore have exposed a problem with employment across the type rather than a uniquely British design failure. The analogy explains the doctrinal misuse that later made the type controversial.
