How battlecruiser naming blurred the intended role

Jellicoe preferred fast battleships and limited scouting roles, while the battlecruiser name encouraged others to treat lightly protected ships as battle-line units.

Notes

The battlecruiser phase's losses need to be separated from the fleet design Jellicoe had advocated. Jellicoe pushed toward fast battleships and regarded battlecruisers as global cruisers or scouts that should avoid a battle-line exchange. The Grand Fleet already had more dreadnought battleships than the entire German heavy force, yet additional battlecruiser firepower was still drawn into the formation. John Fisher had considered calling the type a frigate, while the phrase evolved from dreadnought armoured cruiser through the two-word form battle cruiser to the single compound name. That terminology encouraged the false impression that the ships belonged in battle on the same terms as battleships rather than being cruisers designed to defeat other cruisers.
