How navies planned to employ battlecruisers

The battered battlecruisers prompt a comparison between the simulation's handling and German, Japanese, and American ideas about the type's employment.

Notes

Even a well-built battlecruiser should not remain afloat after the close-range punishment shown in the scenario. The AI is nevertheless using the ships in a way that resembles German and, to an extent, Japanese plans for battlecruiser employment. The later targeting choice illustrates the danger: once battlecruisers enter a battleship-style fight, their weaker protection makes them attractive targets. The passage distinguishes a ship category from doctrine, since similar-looking vessels could be expected to perform different operational and tactical jobs in different navies.
