Japanese losses bought no disruption of the landing

Japan incurred substantial losses without stopping the landing, and supplies already concealed inland were difficult targets for a night bombardment.

Notes

Japan lost Sendai and Hatsukaze, suffered damage to other cruisers and destroyers, and lost twenty-five aircraft in the subsequent air battle. The American losses included a damaged cruiser and two damaged destroyers, with nineteen men killed. Reported Japanese deaths range from roughly two hundred to as many as six hundred and sixty, so a single total cannot be treated as exact. The losses did not prevent the landing from achieving its objective. Even an unopposed bombardment would have faced difficulty finding the supplies already moved inland and concealed, especially at night.
