Chapter ยท 9:49-16:20

Why Yamen needs the Song's whole history

The Song dynasty's defeat at Yamen needs to be understood alongside its earlier achievements and the choices of its opponents.

Notes

An ending alone cannot explain what a state did well, what it did badly, or what pressures its opponents created. Success and failure both raise questions about the choices of a state and its adversaries. The competing English forms Song and Sung show how naming differences can complicate historical study before interpretation begins. The dynasty emerged after the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, a period of fragmentation and warfare. Its collapse at Yamen needs to be examined within that longer political and military history.
