Chapter · 1:04:58-1:07:08

The Beiyang Fleet's defeat at the Yalu River

Japanese maneuver, quick-firing guns, and trained crews overwhelmed a Chinese formation that could neither coordinate nor exploit its heavier weapons.

Notes

Admiral Ding was incapacitated early, and uncertainty over signals and command compounded Chinese difficulties. The Japanese main force fixed the Chinese formation while the Flying Squadron hooked around its flank, subjecting it to fire from multiple directions. Chinese ships could not maneuver or sustain an effective rate of fire, while some hits were rendered harmless by defective shells. The result was heavy ship and personnel loss despite the Beiyang Fleet's nominal armor and gun advantage.
