At the Battle of Ushant, the Royal Navy returned to a large destroyer formation after often dividing its ships into four-ship units. The Allied flotilla combined the British Tribals HMS Tartar, HMS Ashanti, and HMS Eskimo with the Canadian Tribals HMCS Haida and HMCS Huron, HMS Javelin, and the Polish destroyers ORP Piorun and ORP Błyskawica. On 9 June 1944, this multinational force engaged a German destroyer flotilla off Normandy. The Allies largely destroyed the opposing unit before it could interfere with reinforcement movements connected with D-Day. The result removed a German surface threat during the opening phase of the Normandy campaign. This was the Tribals' last major fleet action in European waters before the surviving ships were sent elsewhere.
