The Nile and Nelson's willingness to act

Pursuit, rapid decision-making, and an opportunity spotted by Captain Foley place the Nile among Nelson's more innovative actions.

Notes

At the Nile, Nelson's squadron had repeatedly pursued the French across the Mediterranean and even passed Egypt before finding them. When the fleet was located, Nelson moved quickly rather than waiting. Captain Thomas Foley identified the gap that allowed British ships to pass between the French line and the northern shoal. Initiative was distributed through the force rather than belonging to one hero alone.
