Chapter · 38:32-40:50

Reval turns an anchored fleet into a layered fortress

Russia layers anchored battleships, frigates, and smaller craft while Sweden fails to turn a two-to-one numerical advantage into local superiority against one end of the position.

Notes

At Reval, Rostislav and Saratov lead a first anchored line of two 100-gun ships, four 74s, four 66s, and a 50-gun frigate, backed by lighter second and third lines. Sweden has a roughly two-to-one advantage but chooses to sail past the stationary position repeatedly. One alternative would have been to anchor and concentrate the whole Swedish fleet against one end, a method rooted in older practice even before the Nile. Russian supporting frigates would have made exact doubling harder than at Aboukir, but concentration itself was still available. Formation and local superiority mattered more than the fleet-wide ship count.
