Portland restores the Commonwealth's position

Portland cost the Dutch twelve ships and restored Commonwealth momentum before the Gabbard.

Notes

The Battle of Portland interrupted Dutch confidence after Dungeness and Leghorn. Robert Blake and Richard Deane led about eighty Commonwealth ships against a Dutch fleet of similar size. The Dutch lost twelve ships, making Portland a Commonwealth victory even as their leaders believed the fleet could recover. Its place before the Gabbard shows how the war's momentum continued to swing between the two navies.
