Okpo demonstrates cannon warfare against transports

At Okpo, Yi Sun-sin's organized warships trapped lightly defended Japanese transports and destroyed or captured the force with cannon fire.

Notes

Yi arrived with 24 panokseon, 15 smaller warships, and supporting fishing vessels, while Won Gyun contributed only four surviving ships. The Koreans found about fifty Japanese transports in harbor with many crews ashore looting; smoke from the village helped conceal the fleet's arrival. Arquebus fire could not seriously damage the Korean hulls, and artillery destroyed 26 transports and captured the remaining 24 while Yi kept his men focused on the naval objective rather than pursuing inland. Won Gyun's contribution included mistakenly firing on a captured vessel already occupied by Yi's men, a sharp contrast with Yi's disciplined control of the engagement.
