A victory neither side earned

The Battle of Crete is introduced as a contest neither side deserved to win, despite Germany's eventual victory.

Notes

The opening treats Crete as a contest between two badly failing forces. A joke imagines an umpire with the power to intervene and punish both sides. Germany eventually won, yet neither side's performance is treated as competent. The result grew out of competing failures rather than orderly success.
