Angamos: preserving Unión and encircling Huáscar

Miguel Grau preserved the corvette Unión while Chilean ironclads used numbers and manoeuvre to deny Huáscar a stable target for its concentrated turret fire.

Notes

Outnumbered, Miguel Grau sent the corvette Unión toward Peru so the navy would not lose both ships. Chile had ordered Huáscar and its commander neutralized regardless of cost. Almirante Cochrane and Blanco Encalada moved to surround the monitor. Their approach kept Huáscar's turret shifting between armoured threats and prevented its two heavy guns from concentrating on one target. The larger force used the monitor's concentrated armament and limited arcs against it.
