At Angamos, the Chilean armoured frigate Cochrane opened fire on Huascar from about 2,200 metres. The first shot pierced the monitor's turret and wounded twelve members of its first, best-trained gun crew. Another pierced near the waterline and damaged the steering chain, leaving Huascar temporarily adrift. Cochrane suffered little damage. Peruvian losses were 31 killed and four missing, with 162 captured. Huascar was taken, and her commanding officer Miguel Grau was killed. British, Russian, and French observers could compare this result with Huascar's survival against British unprotected cruisers at Pacocha. Armour combined with effective firepower succeeded where those unprotected cruisers had failed.
