Three allied battle groups approach the planet from separated positions. Concentrating them would strengthen mutual defense, but it would also leave the enemy carriers more routes of escape. Their dispersed positions preserve faster-than-light interception options outside the planet's gravity limit. The commanders therefore have to balance protection of their own formations against the mission to prevent the opposing ships from getting away.
