Battle damage and the limits of victory

The raid permanently removed Conte di Cavour and damaged Littorio and Caio Duilio, while also disrupting Taranto's facilities.

Notes

The damage assessment separates a battleship permanently removed from the war from ships damaged but eventually repairable. One torpedo put Conte di Cavour out of service for good. Littorio and Caio Duilio suffered serious damage but could be raised and repaired, while attacks also disrupted harbour and seaplane facilities. The relatively low death toll does not measure the raid's full operational effect. Its limits are equally important because two of the three damaged battleships eventually returned to the Italian fleet.
