Battle cruisers, fast battleships, and survivability

A proposed capital-ship classification distinguishes battle cruiser, battlecruiser, fast battleship, and battleship by armour coverage, thickness, subdivision, and speed.

Notes

In this classification, a two-word battle cruiser combines battleship guns and local armour thickness with cruiser-like armour coverage and subdivision. A one-word battlecruiser adds protection and internal division at some cost in speed or endurance. The fast battleship has battleship-like armour coverage but may retain thinner protection or less subdivision to preserve a speed advantage. A conventional battleship gives the greatest weight to armour thickness, coverage, and subdivision. This design spectrum distinguishes the protection and speed compromises behind the names.
