The Battle class is a war-emergency design shaped by the gun mounts available to its designers. The early-war pause imposed by Churchill and the Admiralty interrupted design development as well as ship construction, including work on the intended 4.5-inch mounting. To obtain strong dual-purpose firepower, designers installed heavy flat-top 4.5-inch mounts derived from capital-ship use. Concentrating those weapons forward and the 40 mm battery aft was a weight-and-hull-balance decision. Moving the heavy mounts aft could overstress the hull or displace the torpedo armament. Programme timing and mount weight therefore determined the destroyer's visible arrangement.

Battle-class armament reflects a wartime design pause
The Battle class uses heavy capital-ship-derived 4.5-inch mounts forward because the intended destroyer mounting was delayed, forcing armament layout to follow hull-balance limits.
