A wider hull to carry stronger air defence

Battle-class hull and bridge changes show how a revised gun position, directors, and radar reshaped a destroyer's whole arrangement.

Notes

The Battle class measured about 379 feet overall, with a 40-foot 4-inch beam, 12-foot 6-inch draught, and full-load displacement of roughly 3,361 tons. A later group needed a wider beam to accommodate revised air-defence weapons, directors, and radar without abandoning the ship's general-purpose role. Changing the after gun position also forced the bridge nine inches higher so that the interdependent systems could work together. The example shows how one weapon change can affect hull dimensions, bridge height, sight lines, and systems arrangement.
