The Battle class took longer to build than simpler emergency destroyers because it carried top-tier equipment and a more complex weapons fit. Despite their size, the ships were highly manoeuvrable. Only one entered service before the Second World War ended. Their concentrated guns, aggressive appearance, and limited hospitality space suited hard fighting more than the measured gravitas of peacetime presence work. In service they remained the heavy destroyers expected to lead if the early Cold War turned hot, while cheaper ships handled routine duties. Because that war did not occur, the class never received the combat setting for which it had been optimized.
