A Battle-class guide turns ship movements into usable chronology

Patrick Boniface's day-by-day class records help reconstruct deployments, visits, influence, and causation.

Notes

A class history provides a chronology before the researcher opens individual logs and files. Day-by-day entries establish where each ship was, when it recommissioned, and how its movements fit the wider class. Plotting visits against political events can reveal presence missions that never received a formal operation name. Combining the timeline with a map also guards against assuming that one event caused another merely because it came first. Clarke's own book uses the Tribal, Battle, and Daring classes to examine the transition from fighting destroyer to general-purpose destroyer. Its roughly 70,000 or 80,000 words must cover more than sixty ships, so some events receive less space even though no ship is omitted.
