Why primary and secondary battery priorities change

A game-driven swap from a main turret to secondary guns illustrates why the threat environment, not gun count alone, defines a useful battery.

Notes

The Queen Elizabeth Maximus game design separates game incentives from historical naval requirements. The game rewarded replacing one triple 16.5-inch turret with numerous six-inch secondary guns, but such a trade would not suit World War I long-range battle conditions. Extra main-battery turrets provided additional bearings and firing angles against an opponent. A World War II reconstruction might sacrifice main-battery capability for anti-aircraft defense, but only because the threat and operational need had changed.
