The Batavian Republic combined conservative republican reformers, French-style revolutionaries, French clients, and people plotting an Orange restoration. Founded in 1795, it lasted only until an October 1801 transition into the Batavian Commonwealth, followed by Louis Bonaparte's kingdom in 1806. Even the factions seeking a traditional Dutch republic disagreed enough to impede constitutions and coherent policy. Those divisions frustrated France, yet the Netherlands still offered population, maritime skill, and ships that France badly needed against British sea control and the logistics of global war. Britain and Russia could therefore use William V and Dutch political division as tools for capturing a strategically useful fleet.
