Why Batavian politics weakened Dutch sea power

Political division weakened Dutch naval decisions while France sought allied fleets to compensate for lost expertise in its own navy.

Notes

The Vlieter Incident turns on leadership and political allegiance. The Batavian Republic's divided politics slowed decisions despite the Netherlands' wealth and maritime skills. France faced a related problem: the expulsion of Huguenots and the Revolution's purges and exile had stripped its fleet of experienced personnel even where warships remained. French reliance on the Batavian Republic, and later Spain, offered a way to replace some of that lost naval strength. The Dutch alliance therefore mattered to Britain even though political division limited what the republic could achieve.
